Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

Bad Good Guys & Good Bad Guys

Alright, picture this: The Justice League, Earth’s greatest heroes, have gone full psycho, and instead of saving the day, they’re wrecking it. Superman’s melting people, The Flash is zipping around like a nightmare, and Batman—well, let’s just say he’s not in the mood for brooding anymore. Who’s going to stop them? The Avengers? Wrong universe. Enter the Suicide Squad, a gang of lovable criminals who are definitely not qualified for this job, but thanks to Amanda Waller and her signature brand of "do it or die" motivation (hello, brain bombs!), they don’t have much of a choice. Welcome to Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the latest from Rocksteady Studios, the masterminds behind the Batman: Arkham series. But this ain't Gotham, and this ain't a Batman game—this is a full-blown, chaotic, open-world, co-op shooter where the villains are the heroes (kinda), and everything you know about DC is turned on its head.

The game promises fast-paced action, over-the-top gunplay, and a story that takes place in the same universe as the Arkham games—but with a tone that’s way more Deadpool than Dark Knight. Set in a beautifully destroyed Metropolis, this game is all about stylish combat, wacky one-liners, and taking down some of the most powerful beings in the DC universe with nothing but guns, boomerangs, and brute force. The hype was real—after all, this is Rocksteady we’re talking about! But does Kill the Justice League actually live up to its potential, or is it just another live-service misfire? Buckle up, because we're about to break it all down.

About This Game

Storyline

Metropolis is in chaos, and for once, it's not because of Lex Luthor. Brainiac, the intergalactic overlord with a thing for collecting planets, has taken over the city—and, oh yeah, he’s brainwashed the Justice League while he’s at it. The world’s most powerful heroes, who were supposed to protect mankind, are now its biggest threat. Enter Task Force X, better known as the Suicide Squad, a ragtag crew of criminals who’d much rather be anywhere else but are stuck on a suicide mission, thanks to Amanda Waller and her signature head-exploding microchips. Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark are now humanity’s last hope (yikes), and their job? Take down the very heroes they’ve spent their lives either running from or fanboying over. No pressure.

What follows is a high-stakes, action-packed ride through a war-torn Metropolis, where nothing is as it seems, and failure is not an option (unless you like your head going boom). Along the way, the Squad will have to navigate shifting alliances, Waller’s ever-watchful gaze, and their own dysfunctional dynamic, all while figuring out how to defeat gods with nothing but firepower, snark, and sheer dumb luck. The game mixes high-energy humor with darker themes, capturing that perfect Suicide Squad blend of over-the-top ridiculousness and real, desperate stakes. While it keeps the tone light with plenty of quips and absurd situations, there’s always the looming reminder that these are villains playing hero—not out of the goodness of their hearts, but because they have no other choice. And that makes for one hell of a ride.

Gameplay Mechanics

Rocksteady has packed a lot into this title, so let's break down the gameplay into bite-sized chunks:

Character Abilities and Combat Styles

Each squad member boasts unique abilities and combat styles. Harley Quinn is all about acrobatics and melee attacks, wielding her trusty bat with flair. Deadshot excels in ranged combat, utilizing an arsenal of firearms with pinpoint accuracy. Captain Boomerang combines speed with his signature weapon, allowing for quick, devastating strikes. King Shark? He's your brute force, delivering powerful melee attacks and tanking damage like a champ.

Traversal Mechanics

Getting around Metropolis is a blast, thanks to diverse traversal options. Harley uses Batman's grapple gun to swing between buildings, bringing a touch of Arkham nostalgia. Deadshot employs a jetpack for vertical mobility, Captain Boomerang utilizes speed bursts and teleportation, and King Shark showcases his raw power by scaling structures with ease.

Weaponry and Loadouts

The game offers a variety of weapons across three classes, shared among characters. From assault rifles to shotguns and specialized gear, there's plenty to experiment with. Each character can customize their loadout to suit their playstyle, adding depth to combat strategies.

Skill Trees and Progression

Progression is handled through individual skill trees for each character. As you complete missions and defeat enemies, you'll earn experience points to unlock new abilities and upgrades. The game encourages experimentation, allowing you to respec skills at any time to find the perfect build for each mission.

Co-op Multiplayer and AI Companions

While you can tackle the game solo, it's designed with four-player co-op in mind. Teaming up with friends adds a layer of strategic depth, as you coordinate attacks and abilities. Playing solo lets you switch between characters on the fly, with AI controlling the rest. The AI is competent, but the game truly shines when played with others.

Mission Structure and Objectives

Missions are a mix of main story quests and side activities. Objectives range from taking down brainwashed heroes to sabotaging Brainiac's operations. While the core missions drive the narrative forward, side missions offer opportunities to gather resources, unlock new gear, and delve deeper into character backstories.

Loot and Gear System

Embracing a looter-shooter model, enemies drop gear of varying rarities. Collecting and equipping higher-tier gear enhances your squad's abilities, providing stat boosts and unique perks. The chase for better loot adds replayability, though the grind is surely a bit repetitive.

Enemy Types and Boss Battles

You'll face a variety of enemies, from Brainiac's alien minions to corrupted members of the Justice League. Each enemy type requires different strategies, keeping combat engaging. Boss battles, especially against the brainwashed heroes, are multi-phase encounters that test your mastery of the game's mechanics.

Visuals & Audio

Visually, the game is a treat. Metropolis is vibrant and detailed, contrasting the darker tones of the Arkham series. Character models are meticulously crafted, capturing the essence of each anti-hero. The animations, especially during combat and traversal, are fluid and satisfying. The only backdraw is that Harley doesn’t look like the Harley you see in the movies. They did her dirty, in my opinion at least.

On the audio front, the voice acting is top-notch, bringing personality to the squad members. The soundtrack complements the action, with dynamic scores that ramp up during intense moments and mellow out during exploration.

Pros

  • Diverse Character Playstyles: Each squad member feels distinct, encouraging players to experiment with different approaches.

  • Engaging Storyline: A fresh narrative that offers a unique perspective on the DC universe.

  • Stunning Visuals: Metropolis is beautifully rendered, and character designs are impressive.

  • Co-op Fun: Playing with friends enhances the experience, adding layers of strategy and camaraderie.

Cons

  • Repetitive Mission Design: Some missions feel formulaic, leading to a sense of déjà vu.

  • Loot Grind: The gear system can feel grindy, especially for those seeking top-tier equipment.

  • Live-Service Elements: The game's live-service model has been a point of contention, with some players feeling it detracts from the overall experience.

Conclusion

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is an ambitious title that offers a fresh take on the superhero genre. While it has its flaws, particularly in mission variety and live-service integration, the game's strengths in character design, storytelling, and cooperative gameplay make it worth a shot. Whether you're a DC fan or just looking for a new action-adventure to dive into, assembling the squad for this mission might just be the chaotic fun you're seeking.

NOTE: Honestly speaking, I would never pay the full price for this game as it's only fun if you play co-op with friends. But it has gone on a sale of 95% off on Steam which is a steal. I'd surely wait for a similar sale before copping it!
